Snakeskin

Look what we've gotten ourselves in
It's the quickest kind of quicksand
We're closer to the start than from the end
And we're far from where we began
At the feet...

Every window's just a frame
With shards of glass all around
It's drafty in this house of sin
It's withered and it's falling to the ground

Did you think it best
To accept the thoughts
That the flesh would seek
When the soul was weak

Right now
Look at the mess we've made and shout!
This is a mess we've made without
Anyone or anything to guide us through

Now won't you let me take you to a place
Where love never fails
To beat the ignorance so tightly laced
Under the ring of Sunday bells
Because the song is ringing in my ears
And it's an old familiar tune
It's to the rhythm of the falling tears
That are filling up our tombs

But they're crumbling now
And we're crawling out
And we're brighter now
Than we were before

Right now
Look at the snakeskin, tell me how
We were ever made to live without
The only one, the brightest light to guide us through

And what did you want?
And what did you seek?
And what did you find my friend?

I awoke inside the same skin
And breathed a whole new breath from a whole new source
I found my feet upon some different dirt
And started travelling a different course

  1. mk so this may be a little off the topic of what you meant from the song but it reminds me of something that Keith Green once prayed.. he prayed for baby skin on his heart.. to replace the calouses that had formed.. and then he sat down and wrote "oh Lord you're beautiful".. i don't know.. but God makes us new and takes that old hard skin when we come back to him.. it's amazing to me.. and it's so undeserved..
